Now that I have established my goals and motivations for this crazy yearlong marathon of writing that I decided to punish myself with. Now I am going to get a little introspective and analyze what I have learned about this process and my writing. I’ll probably update this in the future as I get farther along.
The first thing I’ve realized is that my fiancée is infinitely patient with my whims and dreams. She has been amazingly supportive of me putting up with my moodiness, ignoring of everything else just so that I could get a few more words written.
As for my style of writing I have found that I am a plotted more than a pantser. Even when I am trying to just write the next thing, I find myself thinking about where the story is going to end. How I want to get there. I think that planning to write out each story for fifty thousand words can effect what I am writing and the twists and turns that take with the stories.
I have found that it is easier for me to keep up with the words that I have to write when I can jump back and forth between projects. I started writing more than one story in late January in order to prevent occasional bouts of writers block from preventing me from staying on top of my writing.
As for my writing habits. I unfortunately have trouble getting started writing in the morning, it usually takes me an hour or two to start getting into a flow. The problem with that is that afternoons are the time that I usually have to spend with my family. I have found that when I get up early and do my workout before I get my stepson on the bus for school it helps me get moving with my writing. I have found that while having something on the TV in the same room with me that I have seen before just to distract my conscious mind a little, if I have on a show or movie that I have never seen before it can become a distraction that slows me down.
I’m trying to take all of these things and put them together in order to maximize my productivity. I’m not sure if all of this will be useful, but it give me a place to start in making my writing more productive.
